Kristen Stewart on playing Bella Swan in 'Twilight': 'I have never not loved this character'

Since The Twilight Saga began and she took on the role of Bella Swan, there’s been no bigger champion of the series and characters than Kristen Stewart. This means it’s particularly annoying when there’s idle internet speculation that the actress has outgrown her role or is disdainful of the hit movies in any way. “It’s nuts,” Stewart says. “It’s insane! I have never not loved this character — ask anyone involved! I don’t really get it.”

Stewart speculates that it’s the photographs of her on the red carpet that’s to blame for any public misperception. “The reason they say I don’t like Twilight is because I don’t smile at the premiere. But I do smile at the f—ing premiere of Twilight. People’s opinion of my opinion of this movie — that I love –has to do with how I don’t smile, I guess.”

Meet Renesmee! Mackenzie Foy of 'Breaking Dawn -- Part 2'

The character of Renesmee, the half-human, half-vampire baby maturing at an unnatural rate, lies at the heart of the drama in The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn — Part 2.

And picking the right actress was essential. “It’s a hugely important part, says director Bill Condon, who spotted Mackenzie Foy, now 11, early on in the audition process. “But this was kind of obvious. It was one of those rare times when you see something — like with an apartment or house — and it feels good and you just need to take it. I felt that way, like, ‘Oh, this is good.’”

Foy grew up outside of Los Angeles and has been working steadily — she booked her first gig, modeling for Ralph Lauren at the age of 3 — modeling, appearing in commercials, and acting on TV shows such as ‘Til Death, Hawaii Five-O, and Flashforward. She picked up some new skills while shooting Breaking Dawn, thanks to her famous costars. Taylor Lautner taught her how to throw a football and Kristen Stewart gave her tips on summoning tears onscreen. (“She said to think of something sad for a very long time.”)

The actress, who is homeschooled, just completed fifth grade. She says hopes to continue being an actress — and eventually a director — for the rest of her life. But in the near future?  ”I’m going to swim and eat popsicles.”

Kristen Stewart on playing a vampire in 'Breaking Dawn -- Part 2': 'I wanted her to be the best one'

After four Twilight movies playing awkward high schooler Bella Swan, Kristen Stewart was ready to embrace playing a vampire in Breaking Dawn — Part 2 . Says costar Taylor Lautner, “That’s kind of the huge thing that fans are waiting for — to see the clumsy teenage Bella that Kristen did so well suddenly become this super-sexy vampire who’s athletic and graceful. She took it very seriously and pulls it off.” (Click here to see 10 exclusive photos from the new movie.)

Stewart says that years of watching her castmates helped inform how she played Vampire Bella. “I knew every single version of vampire, and I took a little bit from everyone. But I wanted her to be the best.”

Box office report: 'Snow White and the Huntsman' is victorious with $56.3 mil; 'The Avengers' becomes third biggest movie ever

Snow White and the Huntsman was awoken to the tune of $56.3 million this weekend, according to studio estimates. That’s a big win for Universal Pictures, especially considering that the studio’s last film, the sinking big-budget bomb known as Battleship, opened to less than half that amount two weeks ago.

Snow White also marked the best debut for star Kristen Stewart outside the Twilight franchise, and the second-best start for Charlize Theron after Hancock. The film skewed female, but just barely, as 53 percent of its crowd consisted of women. The PG-13 revisionist fairy tale was also pretty evenly split between younger and older moviegoers, with 52 percent being at least 30 years old.

Audiences liked but didn’t love the film, which received an okay “B” rating from CinemaScore participants. Considering that Universal spent $170 million producing the picture, Snow White needs to hold moderately well the next few weeks. But even if the movie doesn’t wind up being a huge moneymaker, it at least avoided the fate of Battleship and is the first major post-Avengers flick to exceed industry expectations. Box office update: 'Snow White and the Huntsman' leads with $20.3 mil on Friday; 'The Avengers' becomes third biggest movie of all time

No poison apple here. The action fairy tale Snow White and the Huntsman debuted to a solid $20.3 million on Friday, according to early estimates, and is headed for a $55 million weekend.

That should come as a relief to Universal Pictures, which released the floundering Battleship two weeks ago. The result is also a boon for star Kristen Stewart, who had yet to successfully open a movie outside the Twilight franchise. Still, Snow White arrived with a pricey $170 million budget and will need to also perform admirably overseas to justify its cost. READ FULL STORY »

Box office preview: 'Snow White and the Huntsman' ready to take bite out of competition

After a sluggish Memorial Day weekend, Hollywood is offering audiences only one new major release this weekend. Luckily, it’s the fairest in the land.

The revisionist action-adventure fairy tale Snow White and the Huntsman should have no difficulty dethroning Men in Black 3 and taking the box-office crown. But how big will the movie be? Snow White could very well surprise the industry with a larger-than-anticipated debut, but I’m not counting on it. Instead, I’m anticipating a respectable opening in the mid-40s. Here are my weekend predictions: READ FULL STORY »

Cannes: 'On the Road,' with Garrett Hedlund and Kristen Stewart, is a reverent, if not overly faithful ramble

on-the-road

In On the Road, Walter Salles’ reverent, at times almost painfully faithful adaptation of Jack Kerouac’s birth-of-the-Beat-spirit novel, the characters are always getting high on one thing or another, and I don’t just mean drugs — though they do smoke weed and dissolve Benzedrine into their coffee. They also go to after-hours clubs and listen to twisty ecstatic jazz, their bodies shaking and writhing as the music works its way inside them. They have a lot of sex, too, some of it pretty exposed (hello, NC-17!): On a car ride to nowhere, Sal (Sam Riley), the Kerouac character, who is eager but recessive — a boy-man taking careful stock of everything he drinks in — gets naked in the front seat along with Dean (Garret Hedlund), the Neal Cassady life-force stud narcissist, and Marylou (Kristen Stewart), Dean’s naively game young ex-wife, who is seated, also naked, between the two men as she pleasures each of them with her hands. (I’m not kidding when I say that Kristen Stewart acts this scene very well — for once, she looks more ebullient than cool.) The other high at work is the religion of words. Sal keeps dipping into a volume of Proust, and he types into the night and scribbles in his notebook, doing all that he can to give form to feeling. READ FULL STORY »
