OscarWatch TV: All hail Dustin Hoffman

I could sit and talk to Dustin Hoffman for hours. Which is usually what happens when I meet up with him: The guy’s a first-class chatterbox. As soon as I saw Last Chance Harvey—his upcoming romantic comedy costarring Emma Thompson—I knew he was a Golden Globe nomination waiting to happen. At age 71, he’s an unorthodox but utterly charming leading man. In part 1 of our OscarWatch interview, you’ll see that we were supposed to chat about his new movie, but as per usual, the conversation meanders a bit to other topics, like his six kids and the world’s first cell phone. I hope you’ll find him as much of a riot as I do.

Frank Langella on the big 'Frost/Nixon' controversy

With five Golden Globe nominations, largely enthusiastic reviews, and strong early box office, Frost/Nixon has certainly emerged as a top Best Picture contender. I personally was mesmerized by it when I saw it in October, though I must admit I felt a little deflated when I found out how much of the film was not a recreation of actual events but instead was invented (however brilliantly) by writer Peter Morgan. I expect others to level that criticism against the movie as the awards season goes on. In the meantime, I put the question to newly-minted Globe nominee Frank Langella; see his answer in part 2 of our OscarWatch interview.

Can 'Slumdog' go the distance?

Did a future Best Picture nominee just hit theaters this weekend? After winning the audience prize at this year’s Toronto film festival, Danny Boyle’s electric drama Slumdog Millionaire had its first weekend of limited release and posted a strong $35,000 per-theater average, by far the best of any film out there. I also found the important reviews to be terrific, though not so terrific that the film will be considered merely a critics’ darling. Rather, as it was in Toronto, Slumdog should end up emerging as an audience film, building momentum among the public (and the Academy) as the next few weeks and months go by. As I said on Friday, it really is the only “little” film with a real shot at scoring a nomination. Here’s another OscarWatch TV segment, in which Missy and I discuss Slumdog along with Toronto’s other breakout hit, The Wrestler, followed by a video postcard from Boyle and his film’s star, Dev Patel.

OscarWatch TV: Best Actor front-runners

Here’s another installment of our OscarWatch video series. This time Missy Schwartz and I tackle two early favorites in the Best Actor category: Sean Penn for Milk and Frank Langella for Frost/Nixon. Both are shoo-ins for nominations; the question is whether they can propel their films into the Best Picture race as well.

Edward Norton takes on W?

Okay, my fellow movie lovers: Why haven’t you gone to see Pride & Glory? Because you heard it’s not as good as The Departed? Because it was filmed two years ago and has been sitting on the New Line/Warner Bros. shelf for a little while? Well, all that may be true, but by skipping the film you’re actually missing an excellent crime drama. I was particularly impressed by the performances of Edward Norton and Noah Emmerich, who play brothers in the film. Here’s a bit more of my OscarWatch interview with the pair of Yale grads; see if you catch Norton’s not-so-veiled slam of another Eli, who’s appearing in theaters now in the form of Josh Brolin.

OscarWatch: The TV Show!

I’m happy to announce the proper debut of our OscarWatch video show, in which my film-festival pal (and all-around sharp gal) Missy Schwartz and I discuss the latest awards contenders (including Angelina Jolie in Changeling), mixed in with some interview footage with Oscar hopefuls—in this case Edward Norton and Noah Emmerich from the truly underrated cop drama Pride & Glory. I hope you enjoy it!

Vegas Goes to the Vampires

This Thursday, Screen Gems will host their premiere for Resident Evil: Extinction at Planet Hollywood on the Vegas strip. While the company reserved 800 rooms at the hotel for the big event, it seems they are already over-subscribed. We’re being told that in the first three days, over 1,200 RSVPs came flooding into Screen Gems’ offices. Stars as random as Sylvester Stallone are trying to get closer to Milla Jovovich and her gang of vampire hunters, which includes Ali Larter and Ashanti. Remember: what happens in Vegas…
