Elijah Wood horror-comedy 'Cooties' starts shooting next week

Regular readers of EW.com will know Elijah Wood recently enthused to yours truly about his upcoming horror-comedy, Cooties, which the Wilfred and Lord of the Rings star described as concerning “a zombie virus which effects pre-puberty children.” Well, on Friday, it was announced principal photography on the film will begin in the Los Angeles area on Monday.

Cooties is being directed by the commercial-directing team HONEST (aka Jonathan Milott and Cary Murnion) and co-stars Alison Pill, Rainn Wilson, Jack McBrayer, Jorgé Garcia, Nasim Pedrad, and Insidious writer Leigh Whannell, who penned the script with Glee co-creator Ian Brennan.

Exclusive: 'Star Trek Into Darkness' hits Blu-ray and DVD on...

This fall, your TV will boldly go where no TV has gone before.

EW can exclusively reveal that J.J. Abrams’s Star Trek Into Darkness will be released on DVD, Blu-ray, Blu-ray 3D, and On Demand on September 10, 2013. A digital download of the film will be available three weeks earlier, on August 20.

“I’m thrilled with how everything looks and sounds,” Abrams said in a statement. “We also have some really fun behind-the-scenes special features that we shot on the Red [Epic cameras] and created entirely in-house at Bad Robot. They really look amazing and unlike anything I’ve seen on DVD or Blu-ray before.”

Those special features include making-of shorts about creating the Red Planet and the Klingon home world of Kronos, as well as a sit-down with stars Zachary Quinto and Benedict Cumberbatch — and a segment called “The Enemy of My Enemy,” which explores “how, and why, the identity of the film’s true villain was kept a mystery to the very end.”

'The World's End': Learn all about infamous Newton Haven pub crawl in fake tourism video

Worlds-End.jpg

Here at Entertainment Weekly we’re as keen as anyone that people drink responsibly. Yet we also want you to check out a tourism video for the British burg of Newton Haven and its highly irresponsible invitation to try the town’s infamous Golden Mile pub crawl. (“One mile! 12 pubs!”)

Why? Because Newton Haven is actually the fictitious setting for director Edgar Wright’s sci-fi comedy The World’s End, which stars Simon Pegg, Nick Frost, Martin Freeman, and Rosamund Pike, and arrives in cinemas Aug. 23.

You can check out the clip below.

Drafthouse Films to rerelease deranged 1979 sci-fi movie 'The Visitor'

the-visitor

Drafthouse Films, the distribution arm of the Alamo Drafthouse cinema chain, has announced plans to rerelease the infamously nuts, 1979 sci-fi/horror/action movie, The Visitor. The movie stars legendary film director John Huston (The Maltese Falcon) as — per the official synopsis — “an intergalactic warrior battling alongside a cosmic Christ figure against a demonic eight-year-old girl and her pet hawk, as the fate of the universe hangs in the balance.” (Now, that is something I might be tempted to pay $50 to see on the big screen, particularly as Huston’s costars include¬†Shelley Winters, Lance Henriksen, Franco, Nero, and his fellow director, Sam Peckinpah.) A new, HD restoration of The Visitor will be released to cinemas later this year and will also be available on VOD.

'Ghostbusters' to get the 'Room 237' treatment in new documentary 'Spook Central'? -- VIDEO

Does Ghostbusters contain secret messages about smoking, obesity, and/or the reproductive process of Sigourney Weaver’s character Dana Barrett? Those theories are raised by a new documentary called Spook Central, which seemingly does for the 1984 comedy classic what the recent, subtext-exploring Room 237 did for Stanley Kubrick’s horror movie The Shining.

'V/H/S/2': Directors Evans and Tjahjanto on their insane, apocalypse-cult short 'Safe Haven'

Aliens. Zombies. Ghosts. Yes, there’s craziness aplenty to be found in horror-anthology sequel V/H/S/2, as you might expect from a project whose directors include Eduardo Sanchez (The Blair Witch Project), Jason Eisener (Hobo with a Shotgun), and Adam Wingard (the forthcoming, not-to-be-missed You’re Next). But for this writers’ money, the hands-down loopiest tale arrives courtesy of Timo Tjahjanto (Macabre) and Gareth Huw Evans (much-admired action flick The Raid). Entitled Safe Haven, the Indonesia-set short movie concerns a documentary crew and its horribly doomed attempt to interview an apocalypse-cult leader at his compound. We’ll reveal no more plot-wise — except to add that you’ve never seen anything like it.

Which Oscar-nominated actor has been cast in 'Human Centipede 3'? -- EXCLUSIVE

The Dark Knight actor Eric Roberts has been cast in Human Centipede 3 (Final Sequence). Franchise producer Ilona Six confirmed that the star, who was Oscar-nominated for playing an escaped convict in 1985′s Runaway Train, will appear in the third film of the notorious horror series.

Roberts’ other notable credits include 1983′s Star 80, the following year’s The Pope of Greenwich Village, and The Expendables. Six also confirmed that Tommy “Tiny” Lister (Friday), Robert LaSardo (Death Race), and former porn actress (and former Charlie Sheen paramour) Bree Olson will make their Centipede debuts in the movie. They join a cast that already features returning villains Dieter Laser and Laurence R. Harvey and the series’ writer-director Tom Six.

The Human Centipede is, of course, the infamous and much-parodied franchise in which people are, let us say, affixed together to form a single alimentary canal. The third movie is currently being shot in California and will reportedly feature a 500-person centipede.

The apocalypse is no laughing matter in NSFW 'V/H/S/2' red-band trailer -- VIDEO

VHS2_510x510.jpg

We wouldn’t want to give the impression that V/H/S/2 is an entirely laugh-free zone. But this apocalyptically-minded horror anthology sequel certainly takes a more serious approach to the end of the world than out-and-out apocalypse comedies like the recently released It’s A Disaster and the forthcoming This Is The End.

V/H/S/2 — which features sections overseen by Hobo with a Shotgun filmmaker Jason Eisener and You’re Next director Adam Wingard, among others — will be available on demand on June 6 and arrives in cinemas July 12. You can check out the gory, offensive, and just plain weird, red-band trailer below. READ FULL STORY
